Find your fit: reading frame measurements

Start with a comfortable pair you already own, then compare the complete frame dimensions.

A useful starting point for frame fit is a pair you already wear comfortably. Compare its dimensions with the new frame rather than relying only on “small”, “medium” or “large” labels.

Three measurements you may see

  • Lens width: the horizontal width of one lens, usually in millimetres.
  • Bridge width: the labelled distance between the lenses. Nose contact still depends on the bridge design.
  • Temple length: the length of the side arm.

Why total width matters

Two frames with the same lens and bridge numbers can fit differently because their rims, hinges and curvature differ. Ask for overall frame width when it is not listed.

A simple fitting check

  1. Compare against a comfortable existing pair.
  2. Check whether the temples press at the sides or the frame slides forward.
  3. Check nose comfort and whether your eyelashes touch the lenses.
  4. Read the marketplace return terms before ordering if you cannot try the frame on.

A photograph can help you assess style, but it cannot confirm personal fit.
